Mental processes and/or behaviors that cause emotional distress and/ or substantial impairment in functioning. Deviance: degree to which person"s behavior differs from cultural norms. >40% of americans suffer from at least 1 major psychological disorder. >15% of us population suffers from major depression. Antidepressants are the most frequently prescribed drugs in america. Biological chemical imbalances genetics structual abnormalities within the brain. Biopsychosocial combination of psychological, social, and biological factors. Humanistic natural tendency toward self actualization is blocked. Techniques used to diagnose abnormal behavior: to treat someone appropriately, what must occur first, accurately diagnose the problem why is this so critical. This need led to the development of diagnostic systems. 2 major diagnostic systems: dsm v: diagnostic + statistic manual of mental disorders, icd-10: international classification of disorders. Basic + vague = error: reliability degree to which a person will receive the same daigosis when seen by others, validity degree to which a person will receive the correct diagnosis.
