01:830:101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Sleep Deprivation, Twin, Narcolepsy
Module 9: Sleep and Dreams
Sleep: Periodic, natural loss of consciousness—as distinct from unconsciousness
resulting from a coma, general anesthesia, or hibernation (Adapted from Dement,
1999).
Sleep and Dreams
• Biological rhythms
o 24-hour biological clock
o 90-minute sleep cycle for younger adults
• Circadian rhythm
o Circa “about” and diem “day”
o Internal biological clock of 24-hour cycle of day and night
o As morning approaches, body temperature rises, peaks during day, dips in
early afternoon, and begins to drop in evening
o Altered by age and experience
▪ Young people evening “owls”-- performance improving across day
▪ Older people morning “larks”—performance
declining over the day
BRAIN WAVES AND SLEEP STAGES
o Beta waves of an alert, waking state and the regular alpha waves
of an awake, relaxed state differ from the slower, larger delta
waves of deep NREM-3 sleep.
o Although the rapid REM sleep waves resemble the near-waking
NREM-1 sleep waves, the body is more aroused during REM
sleep than during NREM sleep.
REM Sleep
o REM (rapid eye movement)
▪ Also known as PARADOXICAL SLEEP
• MUSCLES RELAXED BUT OTHER BODY SYSTEMS ACTIVE
• SLOW ALPHA ~ TO RELAXED AWAKE STATE
• GENITALS AROUSE-typical 25 y/o male has erection nearly ½ the
night

Sleep: periodic, natural loss of consciousness as distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, general anesthesia, or hibernation (adapted from dement, Nrem-1 sleep waves, the body is more aroused during rem sleep than during nrem sleep. Rem sleep: rem (rapid eye movement, also known as paradoxical sleep, muscles relaxed but other body systems active, slow alpha ~ to relaxed awake state, genitals arouse-typical 25 y/o male has erection nearly the night. Adults no more than 1/3rd: individual differences: some have first and second sleep periods, sleep patterns are genetically and culturally influenced. Identical but not fraternal twins have strikingly similar sleep patterns. Us & canadians ~ 7-8 hours per night. We stay up later than a century ago. We need sleep: a regular full night"s sleep. Major sleep disorders: insomnia: recurring problems in falling or staying asleep (1 in 4 older adults, narcolepsy: sudden uncontrollable sleep attacks, sometimes lapsing directly into.
