Prototypical neurons (see slide picture) information comes in from dendrites (greek word dendron meaning tree: sending part is the axon thousands of dendrites per neuron. Different methods of counting show that certain parts of brain have different ratio of glial cells to neurons than other parts: closer to a 1:1 ratio. Glial cell name comes from greek word for glue : surround neurons, axons and dendrites and was thought to have a role in information transportation, thought of as support troupes . Microglia: type of cell that has a different origin, related to macrophages (pacman cells that eat the trash in cell) Macroglia: different group of cells from another lineage, oligodendrocytes: make myelin in cns (encased in bone, schwann cells: make myelin in peripheral nervous system (peripheral and cranial nerves, astrocytes: numerous and ones that are visible between neurons. Keep the internal atmosphere or surrounds healthy for the neurons.
