Lectures 9 general brain damage 3, visualization. Golgi stains: shows the cell body, stains some of the dead cells black; only gives the idea of the shape of the cells; may not stain the cells. Nissl stains: pink dye, shows cell bodies only. Cranial x-rays: a photo is taken with a machine, which passes electromagnetic radiation through the body, capturing an image of internal structures. Advantages: picks up tumors, skull fractures and hemorrhages, affordable, easily available. Angiography procedure: catheter inserted via an external artery/groin (ex: femoral artery) and guided close to the site of entry of arterial supply of brain (ex: internal carotid) Angiographies visualize the cerebral vasculature, and examines the brain through the vascular system.
