Document Summary
Social psych: how external forces drive your behavior. Personality psych: how your internal characteristics drive your behavior. Pattern of relatively permanent traits and unique characteristics that give both consistency and i(cid:374)di(cid:448)iduality to a perso(cid:374)"s (cid:271)eha(cid:448)ior. Traits characteristics that describe ways in which people are different from each other: trait can take on different values, personality different than temperament. Describe people and help understand differences between people. Explain behavior: helpful to understand why someone may be lonely / prone to addiction / prone to depression / etc. Predict future behavior: can predict who might live a long time, become addicted to gambling, etc. What are the origins of traits: nature / nurture friends, how parents raised you, hormones, etc. However, some situations may overpower the role of personality in predicting behavior. Behaviors will differ from situation to situation, but still will behave similarly relative to others (eg sitting quietly in class vs. eating a meal with friends)
