Imagining in your mind how to meet id"s needs: executive role in personality - mediates between id"s desires and constraints of external world. Id says you should; superego says you shouldn"t; ego is pragmatic and compromises: freud - structural model, superego (latin for over i ) Introjection -incorporating the values of the parents and society. Nothing is random -doesn"t happen by chance - no free will- or unconscious desire: freud - drives. Car accident, failing exams: neurotic anxiety -unconscious fear that id impulses will become out of control, ex. Fear of not being able to control biological urge and therefore being punished: moral anxiety - fear people have when they violate their moral standards, ex. Spouse cheating - no, he/she is working late every day, or needed to sleep at work : ex. Seeing homeless people and acting like they are not there.
