Document Summary
Approximately 9% diagnosed in the us (3-17 yr) (the brain at a young age can really adapt) Very commonly diagnosed (about 1 in 10) Sometimes over-diagnosed (has been going up every single year) Particular for boys (more active/ rowdy than girls) Often do not do well in school. One in three fathers who had adhd as a child go on to have a child with adhd. Children with adhd are (seems counterintuitive) are prescribed stimulants. But one study with 15,000 children with adhd found no real increase in school performance- long term- graduation from high school, college, etc. Both increase dopamine & norepinephrine in the brain. Blocks dopamine transporter which increases (da) dopamine (prevents reabsorption) Redistributes neurotransmitters rather than causing more to be released. An amphetamine which causes release of dopamine and norepinephrine. A lot of people with adhd are also diagnosed with odd. Not bipolar (bipolar comes on later i. e. in their 20s)
