Physiologic states: pregnancy, puberty, fatigue, immuno-compromised, pre- existing disease. Presence of vectors, flora, and fauna: social and cultural. Access to health care: environmental determinants of human disease, causes of disease. Identifying the causes of disease and the mechanisms by which they spread remains a primary focus in epidemiology: the science and study of the causes of disease and their mode of operation is referred to as etiology. Infectious diseases: pathogens, organisms or substances that are capable of producing diseases. E. g. , prions, bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites: the ability to infect and cause illness is termed invasiveness. Infectivity = the ability to infect a susceptible host.
