Prisons must be full - encouraging harsher and longer sentencing. Recidivism - repeat offences after time in prison. Dehumanization of prisoners - lose track of what it means to have a good death. By 2030, of prisoners will be over 55. More money to keep aging prisoners in jail than younger ones. At a certain point, better to stay in system to avoid having nothing on the other side. Arbitrary punishment - the system does not punish people the same way, punishment depends on class, wealth, race, location, etc.
