Document Summary
Lecture 9: sumedha, dipankara buddha, and gotama buddha in theravada buddhism. The final life and buddhahood of the bodhisatta. Gotama is the last of many thousands of births of the bodhisatta. In his penultimate life, he is born as a prince named vessantara, and it is during this incarnation that he perfects his final remaining perfection, that of generosity (d na), by giving away his wife and children. When vessantara dies, the bodhisatta is reborn as a deva in a heaven called tusita. While residing in tusita heaven, other gods eventually determine that the time has come for him to become a buddha. They beg him to be reborn in jambud pa (the human realm) to save mankind from the unhappiness of sa s ra. He was now worthy of buddhahood because he had perfectly perfected the ten perfections. The bodhisatta was then reborn into the gotama clan of the high-caste khattiya (sanskrit k atriya) tribe of the s kiyas.
