Document Summary
The buddha was born in what is now known as nepal. Siddhartha left the safety of the palace one day and saw the horrors of reality. Saw the four sights, which completely changed him. An old man leaning on a stick - siddhartha realized that he too will become old. A man shrunken with disease - sickness is real. Saw a monk who had no possessions - the man was poor and homeless but content. Siddhartha left his father and became a wandering monk. Siddhartha eventually became so sick that he was almost about to die. Came to a great realization - extremes don t happen (penances, fasting, etc. ) After reaching enlightenment, siddhartha had two options - to remain in the state of enlightenment, or to go out and speak to people about enlightenment. He chose to go out and speak to people. Buddhism began as a movement of monks - a monastic movement.
