Sociology: systemic study of social behavior and human groups. We can"t use social analysis to explain individual events. Mills reading: personal orbits bind someone and limit them. Social context, steps of social relations, culture and structure. Can"t understand one"s biography without understanding their history. Not being able to distinguish the difference between public issues and personal troubles as main source of troubles in society. Public issues: condition the settings of personal troubles. Rich people have rich kids, etc-> racists picked this up too. Theological: things happen by some supernatural force (god) Social darwinists: who lives and who dies, etc based on natural selection. 3 stages of human thought: theological, metaphysical, positive. Facts need to be located in their social context. Moral sentence: morality held society as a whole. Malfhus: overpopulation lead to lack of food and instead of trying to feed the increase in poor people, he thought we should let the poor people die to teach the sexual restraint.
