Poverty serves a funcion: in calling the poor lazy or undeserving, it shits the blame away from those who aren"t in poverty. Example: vaccinaions: lower income families tend to not be vaccinated. Personal problem of social patern: why is sam poor? (agency, why is 15% of the country poor? (social patern, race black/hispanic poverty rates are 2. 5 imes higher than white"s, gender, age, social class at birth. You may not fall into poverty, but you might, and welfare is the insurance you pay into in case you do fall into poverty. It"s the idea that we, as a naion, is responsible for the well-being of others. It"s, in fact, built into the consituion"s very foundaion - promote the general welfare . That work isn"t included in the dichotomy of welfare v. work. The person who gets a job is the person who is willing to do it for the least amount of money.
