Normal sadness responds to normal circumstances, context changes=symptoms change, no severe symptoms just mild. Abnormal no reason behind depression, never go away even when the context changes, immobile symptoms. Genes are selected by evolution because they served some positive purpose. Ancients: 400 years bc hippocrates is remarkable similar to current symptoms, melancholia = depression, how long symptoms last depends on if it is a disorder, what"s normal and what"s disorder, appropriate sadness contextually and inappropriate. Burton: anatomy of melancholy (1621: contrasted disorder with disposition, disposition comes and goes, when to expect sadness, being human we experience melancholy dispositions. Before 1980: psychotic depression, hallucinations, severe symptoms, very serious. Historically: exists after a very serious level. Symptoms need to last for two weeks: major depression 5 symptoms, no excessive so can be proportionate. No context just a list of symptoms. Exception is if the symptoms after an intimate has died. Change in the context will lead to a change in the symptoms.
