As long as there as been society there has been society that use alcohol. The united states, americans were a nation of drunks. Preindustrial drinking water was bad so alcohol was better to drink. Bars were essential entertainment there was no tv. Alcohol meant coming home and beating spouse, children. Prohibition 18th amendment 1920 ban of any alcohol. Controls the behavior of individual instead of the government (the only amendment to do this) German, irish, italian all had strong drinking cultures. The first time income tax is imposed on all citizens = revenue. The government no longer needs the revenue on taxes collected from alcohol. Prohibition became at a smaller time to need revenue. End of prohibition 1933, government needs to generate revenue. Alcohol becomes an essential used in the office, business meetings, home. No one thought a about driving after drinking. Number of deaths relating to alcohol increasing = decades of heavy drinking.
