Hirschi also tested other motivational theories of delinquency: tested strain theory. Measured strain as gap between high education/occupation aspirations and low expectations of meeting those aspirations. Found that most delinquent had no gaps, instead had low education/occupation aspirations all over low expectations. Delinquents were not strained, so strain theory not supported. B/c delinquents did not care about school, began to question cohen"s status. Hirschi also argued that there were no class or race differences in causes of crime: therefore, questions cultural deviance and black sov theories. Claimed weak bonds caused delinquency regardless of class or race. For example: blacks, low income individuals who are attached are less delinquent (micro- sociological, blacks, low income individuals who are not attached are more delinquent, although few tests of hirschi with blacks and low income. Hirschi tested another motivational theory, namely sutherland"s: he acknowledged that sutherlands research showed that delinquent kinds have more delinquent friends, however, he questions sutherland"s causal order that says:
