AFRAS 170A Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Miscegenation, Royal African Company, National Guard Of Ukraine
Document Summary
From capture deep within africa to holding areas in coastal areas. Holding areas were pens on the coast and slave castles on fortified island off the coast. What happened to approx 1/3 of slaves: died from health. Middle passage: passage from holding areas to trip overseas. Morbidity rate- sickness rate- very high: above rates dependent on how africans were packed into the slave ship. If in a ship some people get seasick- vomit: (cid:498)bloody flux(cid:499) outbreaks frequent due to unsanitary conditions below deck. Flux was (cid:494)dysentery(cid:495)-a deadly intestinal disease- watery to bloody. Microbes are causing you to throw up but diarrhea stools- dehydration- many usually died. There to eat, feed on insides, intestines- turn to nothing- died. Tighter the pack=higher the potential profits (more numbers of enslaved cargo), but higher rates of death and illness compared to loose pack. Loose pack- 375 bodies- 188 would live. Tight pack- 600 bodies- 300 would live.
