European settlers who discovered new land were entitled to it. This was incredibly damaging to the native american populations and ultimately led to the removal of them from their native lands. Survivance: term coined by gerald vizenor (white earth nation); an active presence, a continuance of narratives; survivance stories are renunciations of dominance. Signed into law in 1975 under nixon administration. Result of over 15 years of efforts: ;american indian activism, american. Indian movement/civil rights movement, and grassroots political participation. Law made self-determination focus of government action. Reversed 30 year efforts by the federal government to dissolve treaty relationships and obligations to indian tribes under the former termination policy. Enacted in 1978 because of high removal rate of indian children from traditional homes/cultures.
