Daoism

• Dao De Jing
• The Dao
o Translated as “the way”
o Spontaneous process regulating all beings (its everywhere)

o Want to be more in touch with this essence that pervades everything
o The Dao = Unmanifest
• The Dao begot one, the one begot two, the two begot three, the three
begot the ten thousand things
o All of the things that exist and can talk about in the world
o The Dao is the source of The Ten Thousand things
o The ten thousand things = manifest
o We live in the realm of the ten thousand things
• Goals
o To return to the Dao (go backwards on the “begot” path)
o Thought to be becoming immortal if going through this path
o Dangerous to completely live in the realm of ten thousand things and
forget The Dao
• Hundun = Chaos
o In this state, there are no distinctions or differentiations
o Chaotic because of a lack of organization (organization =
classification and division)
o Not negative
