ASIAN 101 – HEAL TH & HEALING
Health and Healing
o Biomedicine
▪ What normal people in the US call medicine
▪ Sometimes called Western Medicine, Allopathic medicine
▪ Sees the body as a machine
▪ Separation of mind and body (Cartesian dualism)
• Body processes are independent of thoughts
▪ Health = the absence of disease
▪ Medicine is curative (not preventative)
▪ Military metaphors
• Invasion by disease
• Attacking disease
o Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
▪ Practiced in much of east Asia
▪ Holistic view of the body and its environment
• Sees the body as a garden, ecosystem
▪ Emphasis on balance and harmony
• Illness is imbalance
• Restore to health by restore to balance
▪ Each person is unique
• Everything matters (age, sex, where they live, what season it
is)
• Focus on the whole person, thoughts and feelings and
experience, more than one aspect of physiology
▪ Emphasis on prevention
▪ Full health = right kind of thoughts and emotions that allow you
to flourish
o The Body in TCM

• Jing - material, physical
o Essence
o Growth and Development
• Qi (chee) - energy that flows
o Life force
o Movement
• Shen - thoughts
