Many fathers and mothers are worried about becoming parents
Rossi analyzed transition to parenthood. Much more difficult than other adult transitions
In a classic analysis social scientist Alice Rossi wrote that the transition to parenthood is very difficult for
several reasons:
Abrupt change to 24 hour duty, and no experience with child care before
Interruptions in sleep, work, leisure time
Parents can feel disconnected and isolated-may not have adequate support
Necessitates changes in relationships sexually and emotionally. Also causes less time together as a
couple
Paradox of parenting where parents feel overwhelmed (motivation should be child serving as love joy
and satisfaction)
GENDER AND PARENTHOOD
--Doing motherhood
Mothers expected to assume responsibility of primary psychological parent
Women today must balance careers and motherhood
Mothers define quality time as having heart-to-heart talks or engaging in child-centered activities
Fathers define quality time as being at home, and being available if needed
20% mothers are single mothers
Only about 5% of fathers are single fathers
Research shows fathers involvement is associated with positive cognitive emotional and social outcomes
SINGLE MOTHERHOOD
Single mothers are aware that to be married is the cultural ideal
A private safety net is associated ith hildre’s etter adjustet
Many single mothers choose further education. However, the stresses of single parenthood often result
in less effective parenting behaviors
TIME WITH CHILDREN
Can be really hard to make time
One way that mothers cope with time pressures is by taking their babies to exercise classes
