It is the only major category of chronic disease that is growing in the us. Eelv = end expiratory lung volume: comfortable volume at rest. Irv = inspiratory reserve volume: the reserve from the top of the tidal volume up to the tlc. Distance between the tidal volume and the tlc. Tv = tidal volume: displacement from the eelv to the tip of inspiration. During exercise (in healthy people: ic should increase, breathing deeper in and out eelv should decrease. Copd: larger rv, eelv rises breathe at a higher lung volume, breathing closer to tlc, when exercising, ic and irv gets smaller with exercise, always at the hyper-inflated volume. In healthy people, there is very little resistance to expiration.
