Johnson's Reconstruction Plan
States must accept the thirteenth amendment
Abolished slavery legally
States must nullify their secession ordinances
Must go on the record that it was an illegal act in 1861
States must repudiate the Confederate debt
Some southerners gave money to the confederates
Johnson said that they would not get paid back for their loans
States should protect the basic rights of blacks
Black Codes
Southern counties haves to redo their wrongs
New laws created for African Americans
You cannot buy property in this country, you cannot have an assembly of more than 10 people
You have the right to marry, ownership of children, naming children
Wants everyone working together as a gang, and pay them cooperatively
Want to use corporal punishment as well
Want to be masters of their own little kingdom (African Americans)
Whites would not do this
Sharecropping - whites will own the land but African Americans will get to work as they desire
You pay with share of your crops, percent of your crops
All throughout the south, individual African American families to grow as much cotton as they can
African Americans take out a loan because they have no money for supplies
One hand they have some level of autonomy, but they go into debt peonage
