What are mass media?
-Newspaper, TV, radio
-There are a few elite producers who create “stuff” consumed by the masses
-Vertical communication :
MEDIA PRODUCERS
CONSUMERS
-Other names for mass media: mass communication, legacy media, traditional
media, old media, main stream media
Why do we use media?
-Cognitive: to get information
-Emotional: to laugh or cry over a movie/tv show
-Personal: to boost self esteem
-Social: to spark interactions
-Escapism: to escape boredom
-Note: these reasons are similar to why we use social media
Declines we have seen:
-Newspaper circulation has declined by more than 30% since 2003
-Advertising revenue and number of newsroom jobs have dropped
-traditional TV viewing is also down
HOW HAS SOCIAL MEDIA CAUSED THESE DECLINES??
-Social media is faster and cheaper
-Social media is interactive/personalized
-Social media gives the ability to share
Disruptive Technology
-Christensen: a technology so different that it allows a new population to access a
product or service that had been in the hands of few
-“disruptive innovation”
