Computer: an electronic device operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory that can accept, manipulate, and store data. Hardware components include: central processing unit (cpu, primary storage, secondary storage, input device, output device, communication device. 8 bits (0 and 1) makes 1 byte. A byte represents a form of something else. Cpu = arithmetic-logic unit (alu) and control unit (cu) Volatile (when you close your computer, whatever is in memory goes away) Input thru keyboard thru cpu(motherboard) back to the monitor. Hard drive is secondary storage & rom is nonvolatile (magnetic disk) Pits and lands are what make up cd/dvds (in grooves) Computers talk through 1s and 0s (on and off) Modulate and demodulate (goes from digital to analog back to digital) Router puts up fake computer so hackers see the first computer instead of your actual computer. Last mile: only as fast as the smallest connection, not as fast as the fiber they talk about.
