Nearly 40 million europeans migrated to the u. s. establishing a pecking order of whites; the english, followed by germans, irish, italians, and polish. Different ethnic white groups used their invisible ethnicity to define selves as white insiders. Blacks and immigrants of color were considered as others not to be admitted to the institutions of larger society. White refers to origins in europe, middle east, or north africa, and includes irish, german, italian, lebanese, 1930s and 1940 - the white population was the largest proportion in history. 2000 - 75. 1% of the population reported being white. Recognition that the way to become american was to assert their whiteness. Intermarriage among other whites diluted the strength the differences mong white groups, and enhanced invisibility of their ethnicity. Recently the u. s. census has shuttled mexicans, middle easterners, and east indians between the white and non-white categories. Unrecognized that unearned social and cultural capital that accuse to whites (sometimes at expense of non-whites)
