The quality that makes country music country is that it was developed by rural dwellers. Although country music has been produced in urban centers like nashville, new. York and hollywood, it draws from the imagery and values of rural life and the common folk who lived that life. Anglo-american, males, from the poor or working-class rural south, who have never lost touch with their roots. In the early 20th century, there was a mass migration of whites and blacks to cities in the south. This situation ultimately led poor whites to realize that they were little better off than the former slaves. This formed in them an ingrained inferiority complex which they attempted to mask with invented myths of their own superiority and individualism. These myths included the white"s believing they had a natural supremacy to blacks, as well as machismo (a perceived condition of male strength and virility. )
