MUSIC 151 Lecture 7: Exam 7 Part 2
Document Summary
Rock was not spontaneously created in the mid-1950s, rather it evolved from the music of america"s history. For example, boogie-woogie blues piano playing from the american southwest exacted a heavy influence on early rock and roll artists of the south. Another significant influence on early rock and roll was jump blues. With its heavy boogie rhythm, strong backbeat, and high-spirits, jump blues inspired northern band rock. Louis jordan was the primary model for bill haley, who led a western swing band in the northeast. He incorporated elements of jordan"s jump blues style into his music, becoming a white rhythm and blues band, with a country flavor. In 1951, haley changed the name of his group to bill. Haley and his comets, and moved in the musical direction of rock and roll. The successful features found on haley"s records are twangy guitar and growling saxophone solos, lively shouting-style vocals, and group riff sections similar to that of the big bands.
