Document Summary

A theory is a set of interrelated concepts/ideas, definitions, and propositions (if-then statements) that are all pulled together to help explain something about development: example: attachment theory. We have our own implicit theories of development; relationships, etc. According to piaget, it is natural to compose theories. Developmental stages - we recognize infancy, early childhood, teenage years, early adulthood, senior citizens. Major influences on development - we are aware of the effects of parents, historical events, societal influences; when we analyze someone"s parents or why they are the way we are. Impact of later development on life trajectories - what"s going to happen in adulthood can change you. Helps to organize what we already know. Helps to bring meaning and make sense of what we know. Helps to generate hypotheses for future research. Lifespan theory: erikson"s psychosocial theory: each stage represents an underlying psychosocial conflict (or developmental task) that is represented by a continuum between negative and positive resolution, etc.
