Document Summary

Tuesday, october 11, 2016 ~ stereotypes and prejudice. Stereotype: generalized thoughts or beliefs we have about a certain group. Get stereotypes from abstract knowledge and examples (media, socializing) Illusory correlation: use vivid example of person performing extreme acts to generalize an entire group"s behavior. Knowing them doesn"t mean you endorse them; it"s how you act on it that matters. Prejudice: feeling (affective/attitude) towards a group based on our stereotypes of that group. Discrimination: behavior based on stereotypes and prejudices; unfair and biased treatment of someone from a group. Reverse discrimination: biased treatment to overcompensate to reverse the effects of discrimination on a group. Can be good or bad: almost no groups with solely negative or positive stereotypes. Can"t apply to an individual alone; by definition is group based; individuals are representatives of their group and its stereotypes. Can be overt (blatant) or covert (subtle) Overt may be diminishing but covert shows it"s not gone.
