Jack wilson created religion called ghost dance to help him and others live a clean, honest life. Ghost shirt = shirt that survived massacre, symbolic supposed to be bulletproof. Revitalization movement: a deliberate, organized, conscious effort by members of a society to construct a more satisfying culture. Some are nativistic movements focusing on the elimination of aliens customs and a return to native ways of life. Often occur in situations of contact between cultures of unequal power in which economic and/or political dominance is imposed on another group. Based on native american round dance practice. 1889 received a prophecy, visited heaven, became messiah. Often leads to trance-like states / states of altered consciousness. They integrate nonverbal emotional and behavioral information into the frontal brain. Communitas: a state characterized by a sense of equality, community, and camaraderie.
