Men owned land and made sure family was stable and had food. Women took care of animals (labor) and cooked so they made sure the family had enough to eat. Clear achievable roles help people feel like they belong. Multiple wives she had more rights and fewer responsibilities a hierarchy. Having many wives changed sense of belonging she belongs in wife #1 role . #2 economic and environmental constraints and opportunities shape family experiences. Young women are meaningful because marriage & marriage is about alliances (not romance) In usa we don"t think about marriage for alliance. *note: the language of barter not great to use. People who think people don"t marry for love (like in us) say barter . With barter we"re telling about one for one (father to father) and that women are commodities moving between men. But critique: women play larger roles than that. They are more than just moving between men / more than a transaction.
