CHEM 331L Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Separatory Funnel, Steambath, Naphthalene

17 views2 pages

Document Summary

The purpose of this experiment is to separate the component of a mixture by chemical extraction. Each component must be recrystallized and the melting point of each must be recorded, so then the total percent recovery may be calculated for the mixture. During this experiment, the percent composition will also be calculated for each component out of the mixture. Set up ice bath in 400ml beaker. Record the weight of 4 large test tubes, labeled a, b, c, and d. Dissolve 1g of the ternary mixture in 6ml of ether. Transfer dissolved mixture to separatory funnel and use steambath as heat source if needed. Add 2ml of nchco3 to the funnel and shake and swirl the solution, ventilating frequently. Remove bottom layer of funnel and put into test tube a, then place in the ice bath. Add 1. 4ml of either and agitate the 2 liquids carefully. Cool in ice bath to compete crystallization.
