CRJU 591C Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Dependent And Independent Variables
Desistance – Part 1
Lecture Outline
Assault with a deadly weapon: Case study. pg141. Incarceration experience isn’t geared toward
getting out. Don’t train you for doing something on the outside. Freedom is only experienced on
visiting day. Pg 146&147: parole officer difficulties
Defining Desistance
If you want to measure it you must define it first. Where desistance ends is hard to summarize.
Cessation or termination of offending Changes, transitions, or experiences
that a person undergoes that lead him
or her to a state of non-offending
“Desistance from crime is an unusual dependent variable for criminologists because it is not an
event that happens, rather it is the sustained absence of a certain type of event (in this case,
crime)” (Maruna, 2001, p. 17)

Assault with a deadly weapon: case study. pg141. Don"t train you for doing something on the outside. If you want to measure it you must define it first. Changes, transitions, or experiences that a person undergoes that lead him or her to a state of non-offending. Desistance from crime is an unusual dependent variable for criminologists because it is not an event that happens, rather it is the sustained absence of a certain type of event (in this case, crime) (maruna, 2001, p. 17) The point at which one stops criminal activity. Causal process that supports the termination of offending (the move from being an offender to a non- offender) This is the definition we are focusing on. Some sort of aspect on your life that you are trying to change. Primary desistance: temporary absence from offending, but not a serious stop in offending. All offenders age out of crime; it just happens.
