Absolutism: a theory and form of government in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in which a ruler claimed unrivaled power, resolution to crisis of border that aged religious wars. Divine right: theory that rulers received their power directly from god. Balance of power: arrangement whereby various countries form alliances to prevent any one state from dominating others-spain, austria, gb and dutch republic set up a coalition against louis in 1688 which caused him to conclude peace. Edict of nantes: a decree issued by henry iv of france in 1958 that granted religious toleration to french protestants. Henry iv was assassinated by a catholic who did not like this decree. Constitutional monarchy: political system in which the head of state is a king or queen ruling to the extent allowed by the constitution. Parliament: legislature- house of lord and house of commons.
