PHYS 799 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Prostate Cancer, Metastasis, Fibroblast
Document Summary
Cancers which have metastasized, or spread to other organs or tissues, are responsible for the majority of cancer deaths. The 5-year survival of individuals with epithelial cancers depends on how deeply into the body the tumor invades. 90% of individuals with tumors which remain in the more superficial layers under the epithelium will survive 5 years while only 40% of individuals with tumors that have escaped into the neighboring lymph nodes will survive 5 years. The initial site of cancer affects the location of metastatic events and the probability of metastasis. In addition, the size of the primary tumor is proportional to the probability of metastasis. The site of a malignant tumor also influences the mode of travel for metastatic cells. Whether it is the lymphatic system, the circulatory system, or through local invasion. In 1889, paget noted that the metastatic behavior of breast cancer was not random because breast cancer tends to metastasize to certain organs.
