BIOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Alpha Helix, Beta Sheet, Hydrophile
Document Summary
Theory that only life could make carbon compounds. Stanley miller experiment= producted organic componds, created the close system of water, heat (evaporation), and water vapor = recreated the early atmosphere of earth with methane, hydrogen, etc. Carbon= 4/8 valence electrons = allowing it to bond 4 times (quadruple bond) Allows carbon to form all different molecule compoudns such as methane and ethane. Isomers- shaped differently so they have different functions, how the carbon covalent bonds are attached that makes the isomer. Macromolecules are large and hard to break down. Polymers- longer and made up of chains of monomers (2 or more monomers put tg. Lipids are the only class without true monomer. Fats: three fatty acids (long hydrocarbon chain) and a glycerol. Saturated fatty acids= no double chains= completely straight. Trans fat- no way to break them down- lead to heart disease.
