BIOL 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Phloem, Double Fertilization, Heterospory
Document Summary
Many characterisics of land plants also appear in a variety of algae (charophytes) Formaion of phragmoplast (complex assembly of microtubules and microilaments) they come from the cytoplasm. 4 key traits appear in nearby all land plants but are absent in charophytes: Apical meristems (cells that are not yet specialized) gametophyte: stage where gametes are made sporangium: makes the cells spores which are respobsible for making the gametopghyte. Mosses help keep nitrogen in the environment so it wont get washed away by rain. Vascular plants: have vascular issue (xylem and phloem) Roots: how water and nutrients are brought up. Microphyills: leaves that don"t have a lot of surface area. Megaphyllis: leaves that have more surface area (ex. Seeds have embryo and nutrients (for proper development) surrounded by a coat. Heterospory (two kinds of spores: male and female) Pollen: capable of making sperm (sperm comes form inside pollen) Cross pollinaion: sperm and egg of diferent plants (similar to reshuling of alleles)
