There are two main components of the integumentary system. There are two parts of the cutaneous membrane. Also kind of includes the hypodermis but not really. Epidermis the superficial epithelium simple squamous. Dermis underlying connective tissue, vascular, contains sensory receptors. Hypodermis separates integument from other organs also called the subcutaneous layer. It is technically not part of the integumentary system. Primarily in the dermis and protrude through the epidermis. Protection: against impact, abrasion, fluid loss, and chemicals. Excretion: glands release salts, water, and organic waste. Sweating and shivering to keep you at a normal temperature. When you are cold, blood moves away from fingers and toes, but it moves to the organs to keep them warm and functioning. Melanin is produced directly over the nucleus of a cell to protect it. Tanning is just producing more melanin to protect your dna. Keratin production: protects against water loss and abrasion the reason humans can live outside the water.
