Peasants, artisans, and merchants: peasants: cultivated rice and other crops on the samurai estates, artisans: provided necessary goods for the samurai. Merchants: had lowest rank because they were not moral but had money. European feudalism vs. japanese feudalism: similarities; Power concentrated in hands of regional military leaders.
