MSCI 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Chemical Equilibrium, Latent Heat, Hydrogen Bond
Document Summary
Water is odd: has unique physical and chemical features, related to its polarity and hydrogen bonding, moderates global temp, density is key to how oceans move, water is essential for life on earth. Surface tension: hydrogen bonding of water creates high surface tension, at it"s surface, water is deceptively sturdy, utilized by i. e. water bug. Density of water is maxed out at 4 degrees celsius: as water cools its density increases to a point. Solid less dense than liquid: bold angle widens, lattice structure forms in solid ice compared to liquid, unique property of water. Ice has 90% density of water and thus floats with only 10% of its mass above water. Why is density important for water: bodies of water freeze top down, not bottom up, so unless pond freezes completely there will always be liquid water below allowing for living organisms. Latent heat of fusion allows state of water to change, not temp.
