HED 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Miscarriage, Genital Wart, Body Piercing
Document Summary
An infection is invasion and multiplication of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites (pathogens) that are not commonly present in the body. Most diseases are multifactorial, caused by interaction of several factors inside and outside a person. Adequate sleep - use of alcohol and drugs. Direct contact: physical contact between people e. g. touching. Indirect contact: no human to human contact e. g. sneezing. Vertical transmission: mother to embryo, fetus or baby. Immunity is a condition of being able to resist a particular disease by counteracting the substance that produces the disease. Autoimmune disease occurs when the body targets its own tissue and builds up antibodies against the tissue to destroy it. Inflammatory response indicates that the invading organisms are being fought systemically. A vaccine is administered to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against further attacks. There are several thousand known species of bacteria, but just over 100 lead to diseases in humans.
