PHSL 410B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek, Matthias Jakob Schleiden, Rudolf Virchow
Document Summary
Chapter 1: introduction to cell and molecular biology. Introduction: reductionist: parts of whole can explain the character of the whole, cell biology: came as a discovery that curved glass can bend light. The discovery of cells: robert hooke: looked at cork trees found cells. Anton van leeuwenhoek: made microscopes and discovered living single cells, animalcules in water: also found bacteria from tooth scrapings and water. Theodor schwann: proposed that all organisms are made up of one/ + cells and the cell is structural unit. Cells are highly complex and organized: great level of consistency from cell to cell, organelles: particular shape, location & consistent macromolecular composition arrangement, cell structure is similar despite differences. Cells has a genetic program, blueprint encoded in genes: genes: construct cellular structures, run cell activities and make more cells, variations arise over time due to changes in genetic information.
