Document Summary

Transmission in photoreceptors rods: photons: particles of light that come into the eye and hit a photoreceptor (rod) In dark, it releases glutamate on bipolar cells (inhibit them from firing) In light, it stops or slows release of glutamate (allow them to fire and depolarize and fire action potentials once it reaches threshold) Color vision - theory: trichromatic theory: developed by herman van helmholtz, we have 3 different types of cones that code for sections of the light spectrum, opponent-process theory: developed by edwald hering. System that produces opposite responses to light of different wavelengths: ex: red cones work in opposition to green cones (one stimulated, the other inhibited); same for blue & yellow and black & white. The inhabitation signal from blue is left= perception of yellow light. Color vision- deficits: x linked disorders: males, protanopia: red/green cones are confused. Red cones filled with green oxin leads to problems of distinguishing red from green: deuteranopia: red/green cones confused.
