Document Summary

Exam 1 will cover chapters 18, 19, and the first section of chapter 20. The exam will consist of 5 problems (some with two parts). There will be a roughly even mix of short answer questions and open-ended calculations. This is a list of things you should be able to do and questions you should be able to answer for the exam. Explain how a neutral conductor is attracted to a charged object. Explain how a neutral insulator is attracted to a charged object. Use coulomb"s law to calculate the electric force between two or more particles. Find the electric field at a point due to one or more charged particles. Draw the electric field lines for different charge configurations. Explain how an electrically neutral conductor can have an internal electric field of zero when placed in an external electric field. Use gauss" law in problems with spherical (point charge, spherical charge) symmetry to find the electric field.
