Document Summary

The coordinated physio processes which maintain most of the steady state in organism. Basal metabolic rate (bmr: energy necess for maintaining life in thermonuetrality, resting, not digesting food. Field metabolic rate (fmr: free-living animals locomoting, feeding, digesting, etc, generally uses double labeled water technique, strongly correlated with body mass. Physiological thermoreg: control of metabolic rate, control of blood flow. Behavioral thermoreg: huddling, shuttling more in lizards or fish moving back forth between sun and shade, changes in posture stretching out, more surface area when hot, basking warm up in sunny place. Morph (anatomical: seasonal molting, dehnel"s phenomenon, blubber. Mammals are endothermic, but control t differently. Historically conserred 3 distrinct patterns with relaticely little overlap. Homeotherm: body temp varies by less than 3degrees, the vest majority of mammals met the def. Energetics in homeotherms: thermal neutral zone what it does during basal metabolic rate is enough, doesn"t have to do anything extra, either side of tnz is energy expenditure.
