Ftp, http , dns all are the application layer protocols. It is used for the data transfer to or from the remote host. It uses two connections one for control at p 21 and the other for the data transfer at port 20. Its out of band control connection is a persistent connection while the data is a non persistent connection. Tftp encoded into rom and used during bootstrap(booting starting a system) process of diskless systems. Runs on udp or any other unreliable packet delivery system. Data transfer between client and server in blocks. Both the protocols are used to transfer files, http for web server to browser and smtp for mail server to client. Both persistent http and smtp uses persistent connection. Http is a pull protocol, the user initiates a tcp connection to pull the information from the server.
