Document Summary
We have read the intro to ep and chapter 1 of ep as well. We have seen power point presentations including a couple by hinman. Aarne vesilind in his essay on rules/ethics/morals says: Rules = explicit commandments which dictate proper conduct. Ethics = the study of systematic methodologies which, when guided by individual moral values, can be useful in making value-laden decisions. Morals = those values or standards or patterns of choice adopted from growing up in and being in the human. Lifeworld that guide us toward satisfaction, fulfillment or meaning. Note that vesilind"s views on ethics and morals are quite similar to hinman"s. Vesilind"s main point in his essay is that rules and ethics can be taught but morals cannot. Hinman q: how is it that ethics is more like engineering than say physics or math? . Thingly things for what we call focal things.
