Virginia"s continuing woes: continuing economic problems, 1622 indian attack under opechancansugh, royal investigation, virginia company lost the charter, but was granted permission to become a colony. 17th century chesapeake society: predominantly young single males, high mortality rate, short life expectancy, plantation society, very few towns, frontier equality , gradually polarized society. England under the stuarts: reign of james i (1603-1625, divine right of kingship, religious policies, disregarded parliament, not in session for 11 years. Charles i (1600-1649: english civil war, was executed by anti-royalists, commonwealth under oliver cromwell (1649-1660, after execution, english reinstituted monarchy.
