In 1853, commodore perry sails to japan with modern flee and when the us sails into. Japan, the government cannot believe how the americans had a very advanced flee and weapons. He tells the japanese to open trade with the united states. If they did not open their ports to trade, the us will be back and launch a war against japan. By 1853, really this marks the ending of isolation for the japanese history. This leads to internal tension in japan because there are many japanese people who want to stay being isolated and use their traditional methods. On the other hand, there were political leaders who believed in modernisation. By 1859, about 40% is literate and that is because there were people who were still holding onto olden ways.
